Last week

01/20/2011

I will be doing a regular post of what I’m reading…just because…well…I read…a lot. I appreciate any reading suggestions and love hearing opinions on books (just because I read something doesn’t mean I liked it).

Last week I read the Hunger Game Trilogy. It was a fabulous adventure. If you need a fun read, I recommend it.

Kidney Anyone?

01/03/2011

I am an instructor and I’m constantly intrigued by stories and learning techniques from other instructors. Per my usual, I was reading my NPR online and discovered a story concerning Michael Taber, a Philosophy professor at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, whom decided to allow (tentitively) his students to decide whether or not he should donate a kidney. The premise of this exercise revolved around one’s interpretation and application of ethics. I found it so thought provoking: both as an educator and a person that I’ve included the LINK HERE.

Would love to hear your thoughts. The approach grapples with the lines of theory and application.

Resolving a few things

01/02/2011

I’ll be honest, I think I’m better a fixing things then I am. solutions are not my thing (with the exception of puzzles, I love those). In 30 years I’ve come to realize that few things are truly solved with a bandaid; concerning both physical wounds and soul ones. New Years Resolutions are not normally my thing. I take issue with just choosing one day a year to change (I believe it’s a daily thing). However, a friend of mine said something the other day about how grateful she is that as a society we recognize a time of year that we dedicate to setting our mind on new ways/new beginnings and I struggle with seeing the bad in this. Resolutions are not always bandaids, more often they are proclamations, hopes, and desires consciously stated.

Here is my resolutions list. It’s a bit rough…I haven’t made one in a while:

  • To know God more.
  • To live a life of worship.
  • Play more with my children. There’s far too few years where my kids will actually want to play with me and invite me to pretend with them…I must seize them!
  • Limit my “is” statements. As in “Krystin is …..”  labeling not only kills room to change but also lacks grace and assumes superiority. I lecture my interpersonal students on this one all the time.
  • Know my children in a deeper way.
  • To honor the creative parts of me and write more.
  • Be more aware of others in my life.
  • finish a century ride
  • Eliminate our debt.

and the simple, yet most difficult ones;

  • Make an eye appt. so I don’t go blind.
  • teach my son to take out the trash
  • potty train my daughter
  • manage my time/household better

Cheers to some endings and new beginnings!

An Adventure

12/31/2010

We were invited to go ice skating in Yosemite.

It was a bit snowy.

A bit too snowy.

There was no skating.

There was lots of snow though…

There was igloo building

and snow ball fights

And beautiful baby boys in pink

There was family time

And friend time

It was unexpectedly memorable and absolutely epic.

Feed Fresno

12/31/2010

If you have not heard Walmart is doing a fairly amazing donation tomorrow. The community that receives the most “likes” (for you facebooker’s out there) by 12/31/10 will be given 1.5 million dollars to feed the hungry. The national average of Hungry (those who cannot afford meals) in most communities is 9.2%, unfortunately, in Fresno we are above par with a whopping 24.1%.

Here’s the deal: go HERE and click “like”. Support those who are hungry by simply moving your mouse. Then repost this information. or email your friends. Send spam and if they get mad send them my way ;)

Dutch Oven (no not the joke)

12/30/2010

For Christmas I received a very gorgeous and very large Creuset. As most of us lovers of cooking know, these don’t come free. I feel compelled to make my ownership of this lovely, large, red Creuset worth every penny. So, I need RECIPES. If you have them share them, please. If you are still trying to figure out what a Creuset is, refer to image below. If you are trying to figure out what the joke is involving Dutch Ovens…you’re on your own.

Iron Bess Kidd

12/28/2010

I know that the offical “talk like a pirate day” is in September (19), however, I’m planning my sons pirate birthday party (because he’s turning 4 gah!) and while researching a few things I discovered a fun little quiz. If you want to find out your pirate name (read: if you’re that bored right now) click the link below! Oh and please share. Anything has to be better then mine “Iron Bess Kidd”.
